Biography of Hernán Alejandro Olano García, PhD.
Born in Santiago de Tunja, Colombia, on October 12, 1968, he is a lawyer who graduated from La Gran Colombia University in 1991, an institution founded by his maternal grandfather. He participated in an exchange program at Gainesville High School in Florida (USA) and has developed a distinguished academic, legal, and diplomatic career.
He holds a Master's degree in International Relations and a Master's degree in Canon Law from the Pontifical Javeriana University, in addition to doctoral studies in Canon Law. He has specializations in Bioethics, Human Rights, Constitutional Law and Political Science, University Teaching, History of Law, and Strategic Military Leadership, completed in Colombia, Spain, and Venezuela. He also earned a Licentiate in Canon Law from the Pontifical Javeriana University.
He has received numerous academic awards and honorary doctorates in Political Science, Diplomatic Studies, Philosophy, History, Canon Law, Social Work, and Heraldic and Genealogical Studies, granted by universities and academic institutions in Italy, the United States, Argentina, Brazil, India, and Suriname.
For more than three decades, he has participated in international seminars, conferences, and programs related to constitutional law, human rights, bioethics, international humanitarian law, genealogy, heraldry, diplomacy, and political science in countries such as Spain, Poland, Argentina, Costa Rica, and Italy.
Professionally, he has served as an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Law of the University of La Sabana, where he also held the positions of Head of the Public Law Department, Director of the Center for Socio-Legal Research, Academic Secretary, and Director of the legal journal “DÍKAION.” He has also taught postgraduate courses at various Colombian and international universities.
In the public sector, he held positions such as Acting Secretary General and Secretary of Guardianships of the Constitutional Court of Colombia, Advisor to the Ministry of the Interior, Director of Internal Control of the Bogotá City Council, and Head of the Special Unit for the Prevention of Money Laundering at the Caja Agraria (Agricultural Bank). He has also served as a notary and judge in the ecclesiastical sphere.
His international academic work includes memberships on scientific and editorial boards, participation as a speaker and panelist at international conferences, and honorary appointments at universities and academies in Italy, Canada, Australia, Germany, Argentina, and Sierra Leone. He has been a visiting and honorary professor in areas such as Constitutional Law, Bioethics, History, International Relations, and Nobiliary Law.
His career reflects a broad commitment to higher education, legal research, academic diplomacy, and the promotion of human rights and international culture.
